Abilene and Taylor County

Abilene is a city of over 117,000 (up 1% since 2000) located along Interstate 20 at the intersection of US Highways 83, 84, and 277. Abilene was named after the Kansas cattle town and was established on 15 April 1881. However, the area had long been settled by Indians, then the U.S. Army, then buffalo hunters and ranchers before that date. Abilene is the county seat for Taylor County. Taylor County was named after Edward, James and George Taylor; three sons of Anson Taylor all killed at the Alamo. The current Taylor County Courthouse was just built in 1971. The previous courthouse still stands across the street from the new one.

There are quite a few nice museums in Abilene.

Cat in the Hat

Abilene is also pretty kid friendly with a couple of kid related museums and statues; like the "Cat in the Hat".
