Winchester and Franklin County

Winchester is a steadily growing town of about 8500 (up 16% since 2000) located at the intersection of U. S. Highways 41A and 64 in Franklin County in Southern Tennessee near the border with Alabama. Winchester was established in 1809 to serve as the county seat for Franklin County and was named for Kames Winchester, a soldier from the American Revolution, the first speaker of the house for the state of Tennessee, and a Brigadier General in the War of 1812. A number of notable people are associated with the town of Winchester, including" Four former governors, three people honored by the British Crown, and Singer/TV personality Dinah Shore. Franklin County was established in 1807 and was named for Benjamin franklin (one of my favorite people from history). The Franklin County Courthouse was completed in 1937 using the Art Deco style of architecture and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Winchester Historic District

Winchester has a nice historic district with several buildings of historical and/or architectural interest. There are 9 individual locations in Winchester listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Veterans Memorial
