McAlester and Pittsburg County

McAlester is a small city with a population of about 18,000 located in Southeast Oklahoma. It is the county seat for Pittsburg County and is the largest city in the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. The town was named after J. J. McAlester who became Lieutenant Governor of the state and was immortalized in the book "True Grit". Pictured here is the old courthouse which was undergoing restoration when I drove through.

Old High School

There are quite a few buildings that are of historical and/or architectural interest in McAlester, including the old Hisg School. Many of the building are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

First Presbyterian Church

Another of the historic buildings.
