Heavener Welcome Center

The town of Heavener has a welcome center on the edge of town. This is a great place to stop to get information on the town, the runestone and other attractions in the area. The lady that was there when I visited was friendly and knowledgeable.

Heavener Historic District

Heavener has a nice little historic district that has some buildings of historical and/or architectural interest.

Heavener Runestone

The main reason for coming to Heavener is probably to see the Heavener Runestone. There is a lively debate ongoing as to the origins of the 12 by 10 foot stone. Some say it dates from 1011 and is proof that the Vikings explored the area. Others point out that the type of writing on the runestone was obsolete 200 years before the dates of Viking exploration in North America. There are also a couple of errors in the script. Regardless of the origin of the runestone it is interesting to see. This was a state park until it was closed in 2011 by the state of Oklahoma for budgetary reasons. The park was then taken over by the city of Heavener and reopened.
