Fort Towson Depot

Fort Towson is a tiny town of about 500 (down 15% since 2000) with an interesting history. The town of Fort Towson was established in 1902 and was named after the nearby fort, which was named after General Nathan Towson a hero of the War of 1812. The historic Fort Towson Depot was serviced by the Arkansas and Choctaw Railroad.

Fort Towson Historic Site

On the outskirts of town is the Fort Towson State Historic Site preserving the location of Fort Towson which was established in 1824 to protect settlers in the area.


Doaksville was one of the major towns in the Choctaw Nation and was located about 1 mile from Fort Towson. There is a museum dedicated to telling the story of Doaksville in Fort Towson.
