Altus and Jackson County

Altus is a town of just under 20,000 (up 8% since 2000) located at the intersection of US Highways 62 and 283 in Southwest Oklahoma near the border with Texas. Altus was settled in 1886 as Frazer and later changed its name to Altus (meaning "High place"). The town is home to an air force base and a college, and is the county seat of Jackson County. The Jackson County Courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Historic District

Altus has a decent little historic district with a few buildings of historic and/or architectural interest.

Veterans Monument

This is by far the most unusual, strange looking Civil War Memorial I have seen. Not sure what the concept was but I will not comment on what it looks like.
