Fort Stanwix

The area around Rome, New York was inhabited and/or transited for many centuries. This rea was a major trade and hunting route for the Oneida Indians and other tribes. Later the fledgling colonies of the United States established a fort here. During the Saratoga campaign of 1777, British forces including regulars, Hessians, Indians, and Canadians attacked Fort Stanwix. The defenders, led by Col Peter Gansevoort, held out and along with the British losses at Oriskany, Bennington, and finally Saratoga proved to be a turning point in the war.

The fort has been nicely restored and provides an interesting look into the countries formation. It is also interesting to see this old fort withing the confines of a modern city.
