Great Basin National Park

The state of Nevada can deceive you. In many places the state looks like there is absolutely nothing there that anybody could possibly want or want to see. But Las Vegas is here, and so is Great Basin National Park. There is a lot worth seeing in the state and the park it just takes a little more effort to get there and to see it. Great Basin National Park is on the Eastern edge of the state near a desolate part of Utah. There is a surprising avriety of things to see and do here; just remember that there are no cities. A drive up Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive takes you up 3000 feet in elevation to the top of Wheeler Peak. There are several stops along the way for various hiking trails, campsites, picnic sites, and other attractions. The park is a part of the land formation called the great basin which includes most of Nevada, a large part of Utah, part of Southern California and small portions of Oregon and Idaho.

Baker Lake Trail

There is another road in the park, this one unpaved, which leads to the Baker Creek area and a very nice hiking trail called the Baker Lake Trail. There is a camping area here too.

Lehman Caves

Another attraction in the park is Lehman Caves, named after one of the early settlers in the area, Absalom Lehman (of course the American Indians knew of the cave long before his arrival. Lehman Caves is particularly well known for the large number of shield formations found therein.
