"Basaic Capitan Page" Capitan by Basaic

Capitan is a village of about 1500 located in historic Lincoln County in South Central New Mexico. Capitan is located on the Billy the Kid Scenic Byway. Capitan was founded in the 1890s but was not incorporated until 1941.

Capitan Museum

There is a small but kinda neat museum in Capitan displaying history of the area. Pretty much open by appointment only.

Smokey Bear Historic Park

In the Spring of 1950, a small black bear was found badly burned in nearby the Capitan Mountains. He was first named Hotfoot Teddy before being given the name "Smokey the Bear". He was the real-life inspiration for the tremendously successful icon of the forest service. When he died he was buried near the Capitan Mountains in what is now Smokey the Bear Historical Park.
