Washburn and McLean County

Washburn is a small town of about 1300 (down 5% since 2000) located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 83 and Alternate North Dakota Highway 200 in McLean County in Central North Dakota a bit North of Bismarck. Washburn was established in 1882 and was named for W. D. Washburn a businessman and politician from Minnesota. Washburn is the county seat of McLean County. McLean County was established in 1883 and was named for John A. McLean the first mayor of Bismarck. Washburn had a beautiful old courthouse that was built in 1908 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places but they demolished it in 2013. The new one is fairly;y pretty for a modern courthouse but I wish they kept the old one too.

McLean County Museum

Washburn is also the home of the McLean County Historical Museum.

Washburn has a nice veterans memorial located on the courthouse grounds dedicated to all McLean County citizens who died serving in the military during times of war.
