Visitors Centers/Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park was made our 10th national park in 1910. It is partnered with a Canadian National Park to form Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park. In addition to doing your research prior to coming to the park, I recommend your first stop be one of the visitor's centers. There are visitors centers near the east and west entrances to Going-to-the-Sun Road through the park and another at Logan's Pass near the center of the park. There is also an information center at Many Glacier.

Glaciers and Roads

The landscape here was formed some 170 million years ago when it was forced eastward and up over the newer rocks to the east by the collision of the continental plates. The landscape was then gouged into the current formation by glaciers during the ice age. The number of glaciers in the park have decreased steadily and there were 25 active glaciers in the park in 2010. The main road through the park is called "Going-to-the-Sun Road". Here is one of the galciers that give the park its name.

Off the Main Road

There are other entrances to the park. One of the other roads I drove down was Two Medicine. The highlight of this drive, for me, was Running Eagle Falls. The hike to the falls was fairly short and pretty. I appeared to be the only human on the trail, I did see some wildlife. There are 700 miles of hiking trails in the park, so there is something for everyone.
