"Basaic Woodville Page" Woodville by Basaic

Woodville is a town of about 1000 located along US Highway 61 in the Southwest corner of Mississippi near the Louisiana Border. Woodville was the boyhood home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, the home of General Poindexter, the location of the first railroad in the state and the oldest business in the state; the Woodville Republican, a weekly newspaper. Woodville was established in 1811 and is the county seat of Wilkinson County. Wilkinson County was named for a military leader, James Wilkinson.

Historic District

In addition to the two plantations in the area (see Doug48s great page) there are a few buildings of historical and/or architectural interest near the courthouse.

Wilkinson County African American Museum

There are two museums near the courthouse; the Wilkinson County Museum, and the Wilkinson County African American Museum. Both are worth a visit.
