Starkville and Oktibbeha County

Starkville is a big town of almost 24,000 residents located along US Highway 82 in East Central Mississippi. Mississippi State University, the largest university in the state, is located parthly in Starkville. The university is the towns lragest employer and social activities tend to revolve around the campus. This area was inhabited at least 2100 years ago and there is a mound site nearby. The town was established in the 1830s and was named after Revolutionary War hero John Stark. Starkville is the county seat of Oktibbeha County. There is some disagreement as to wether the name of the county is an Indian word for "Bloody Water" (after a battle fought near the river; or the Indian word for "Icy Creek".

Starkville has a nice historic district with several buildings of historical and/or architectural interest.

Veterans Memorials
