Nevada and Story County

Nevada (pronounced (Nuh-VAY-duh) is a town of about 6800 (up 1% since 2000) located just north of US Highway 30 (The Lincoln Highway) in Central Iowa, close to Ames and not that far north of Des Moines. Nevada was formed in 181853 as the county seat for Story County and was named for the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Please note that the town got its name a decade before the state. Nevada is still the county seat of Story County, even though nearby Ames has vastly outgrown Nevada. Story County was formed in 1846 and was named for Justice Joseph Story of the U. S. Supreme Court.

Nevada Historic District

Nevada has a nice historic district with several buildings of historical and/or architectural interest. Two buildings, a bridge and one entire district in Marshalltown are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Veterans Memorial

Nevada has a very nice Veterans’ Memorial on the courthouse grounds honoring those who have served and especially those who died during their service in the nation’s military. I feel it is important to remember the contributions and sacrifices made by our military in the preservation of our freedom and way of life.
