Lamar and Prowers County

Lamar is the most populous city in, and the county seat of, Prowers County. It is located in the Southeastern part of the state and has a population of nearly 9000. Lamar is served by Amtrak and by three US Highways allowing east access to the town. Lamar was on the old Santa Fe Trail. Prowers County was named for John W. Prowers a leader in the settlement of the lower Arkansas River Valley. The Prowers County Courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places

Big Timbers Museum

Lamar also had a nice nuseum showing the history of the town and the area. It had a couple of buildings worth of displays at the time and has now expanded to include a transportation museum. This place is well worth a visit when you are in the area. There are other interesting attractions nearby like Bent's Old Fort and the Sand Creek Massacre site.

Lamar Historic District

Lamar has a nice historic district with several buildings of historical and/or architectural interest. A few of them are listed on the National register of Historic Places.
