The best place to begin you exploration of the park is at the visitors center. Here you can see displays about the terrain and how it was formed as well as the human history of the area. There is a nice easy hiking trail just outside the center. The park has three main life zones: Stone: Which includes Alpine, subalpine and moraine forrest areas; Sand; and Stream.
These are the tallest sand dunes in North America growing up to 750 feet in height. There is a surprising amount of life in these barren-looking dunes. Keep your eyes open for Ord's Kangaroo Rats, Tiger Beetles, and various flowers (in season).
There are also roads and trails that will take you into the greener parts of the park like the trails at the Montville Trailhead.
