Nashville and Howard County

Nashville is a town of just under 5000 located in Southwest Arkansas at the intersection of US Highways 371 and 278. The townsite was first settled in 1835 when a church was built along the banks of the river. The town had several names before it was finally named after Nashville, Tennessee. Nashville is the county seat of Howard County which was formed in 1873. Howard Cunty was named after State Senator James Howard and is a dry county meaning the sale of alcohol is prohibited. The Howard County Courthouse is one of the few public buildings in the state built using the Art Deco style of architecture. The first county seat was Centre Point; but after the railroad was completed into Nashville, the town rapidly outgrew Centre Point. After a bitter election in 1905, Nashville was selected as the county seat. The world’s largest dinosaur trackway was found near here in 1983.

Historic District

Nashville has a nice historic district with several buildings of historical and/or architectural interest.

Veterans Memorial

There is a nice memorial to those who have served in the U.S. Military, and paid the ultimate price, on the courthouse grounds.
