Lake Village and Chicot County

Lake Village is a small town of about 2500 (down 12% since 2000) located along US Highways 65 and 278 in Chicot County in far southeast Arkansas. Both the town and the county get their names from Lake Chicot which is an oxbow lake formed from the Mississippi River. Lake Village is near the borders with Louisiana and Mississippi. Charles Lindbergh made his first night flight over Lake Village in 1923. There is a local legend that explorer Hernando de Soto is buried under Lake Chicot. Lake Village is the county seat of Chicot County. Chicot County was formed in 1823. The current Chicot County Courthouse was built in 1956 and is a nice example of the Art Deco style of architecture. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
