Hamburg and Ashley County

Hamburg is a town of about 3000 located in the Southeastern corner of the state. Hamburg is the county seat of Ashley County. Ashley County was formed in 1848 and is named for Chester Ashley a lawyer and U.S. Senator from Arkansas. The county courthouse is fairly new and not that interesting historically or architecturally. Ashley County is a dry county, meaning the sale of alcohol is prohibited.

Ashley County Museum

The Ashley County Museum is housed in a home built in 1918 for David E. Watson. The museum is first a means to preserve the home and a number of very nice pieces of period furniture. There are also displays of horseless carriages, pre-historic Indian relics/archeological items, along with a large collection of old books, photos, and other memorabilia. This is a pretty nice small town museum. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

City Square

There is a nice city park located near the county courthouse in the downtown area.
