"Basaic Altus Page" Altus by Basaic

Altus is a small old town that has long been a stop between Little Rock and Fort Smith, both by highway and the old railroads. The population in 2010 was under 1000. The soil in the area is well suited to growing grapes and there are several wineries in the area. Altus has an interesting history that you can learn about at the Altus Historical society Museum. I liked this useum and the people running it.

Historic District

Altus has a small but interesting historic district with a few buildings of historic and/or architectural interest. One building, St Mary's Catholic Church (which I did not see), is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Coal Miner Memorial

Coal Mining was also important to the history of Altus. There is a memorial to coal miner's that died in the mines along with a few veterans memorials in a park in the center of town.
