Macon County Court House

Tuskegee is the county seat of Macon County and has a population of about 12,000. The court house, which was built in 1905, is very pretty and is located across from Tuskegee Park which is very nicely landscaped.

Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site

On the outskirts of town you will find the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site. During World War II this location served as the site for an "experiment" to train African Americans as military pilots. Many of the pilots proved themselves to be fine pilots and true patriots. The approximately 15,000 people who trained as pilots and support personnel became known as the Tuskegee Airmen and are honored at this site.

Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site

Another important piece of American History is commemorated by the Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site located inside the town limits. This place of higher learning was started in 1881 by a former slave and a former slave owner and was dedicated to the education of the freed slaves. Today it is still dedicated to the furtherance of the education of African Americans. The park includes the George W. Carver Museum and The Oaks, home of Booker T. Washington. It is located on the campus of Tuskegee Unversity.

You gotta love these typical Americana towns with so much history and I even like the name of Tuskegee.
