Greenville and Butler County

Greenville is a town of about 8100 located in Southern Alabama along Interstate 65. Greenvile was estanlished in 1819 and was named after Greenville, South Carolina, the origin of many of the original settlers (this is much better than the original name of Buttsville). Greenville is the county seat of Butler County which was formed in 1819 and named after Captain William Butler who was killed during an uprising of the Creek Indians. The first county seat was Fort Dale (1819) but Greenville was made the county seat in 1821. I really liked this courthouse!

Greenville Historic Districts

Greenville has a few different historic districts with a quite a few buildings of historical and/or architectural interest. There are many buildings listed on the National register of Historic Places.

Veterans Memorials

There are a couple of nice memorials on the courthouse grounds to those who have served in the U.S. Military.
