Baldwin County Courthouse

Baldwin County is the third oldest county in the state of Alabama. It was established in 1809 while still part of the Mississippi Territory, which is ten years prior to Alabama becoming a state in 1819. The first county seat of Baldwin County was McIntosh Bluff. The county seat was transferred to Blakeley in 1810, and then moved to the city of Daphne in 1868. In 1900, Bay Minette was designated the county seat, but the city of Daphne resisted relocation. The citizens of Bay Minette moved the county records from Daphne in the middle of the night and delivered them to the City of Bay Minette. Bay Minette has a population of about 8500. It looked like a pretty nice town.

Bay Minette Historic District

There are a number of interesting, historic buildings in the downtown area, many of them near the courthouse.

Bottle Creek Indian Mounds

Bottle Creek Indian Mounds is an archaeological site within the Mobile-Tensaw River delta located southwest of Bay Minette. The site was occupied between 1250 and 1550 AD, by the Mississippian culture. It is located on Mound Island in the Mobile-Tensaw River delta and includes 18 earthen mounds, the tallest being roughly 45 feet high. I did not see the actual site but a monument to its declaration as a National Historic Landmark.
