North Carolina has long established itself as a home for cutting edge biological science, though this powerhouse has resided in the Triangle area (home to UNC, NCSU, and Duke Universities). However, in 2008 David Murdock, owner of the Dole Corporation, decided to dedicate some of his money to the creation of a new science facility, located on the ground of the old Canon Mill in Kannapolis. He helped start building a new research center, the North Carolina Research Campus, that was aimed at health issues. The buildings have slowly gone up, and with them a new life injected into the town.

A quaint town

Beyond science, Kannapolis is a small town, tucked close to Charlotte, with a lot of small-town charm and appeal. I've moved here to work at the research center on my PhD, and am trying to take time to get to know the area. So far, so good.
