Down in the Delta

The end of the line

Along the Pearl River
After traveling over 2000 miles through the American countryside, the great Mississippi river eases its way to the Gulf of Mexico. The river bucks against the inevitable pull of the Gulf, twisting and turning trying to avoid its fate. Finally it splinters under the pressure, and a multitude of smaller rivulets spill into the great body of water.

Along the way, the river slows down, turning into a marshy delta of half-submerged life. One of the most productive ecosystems in the country, it serves as home to numerous species, which are great to view and experience.

Historical City

In the middle of all of this is New Orleans, the city which sprung up from the depths of the delta. The city has been occupied by different nations, including Spain, France and the United States. A central spot in Southern commerce and trade across the Caribbean, the city is rife with history. Various neighborhoods showcase the vast diversity of this history, from the French Quarter to the Garden District.

Exploring the City

The downtown area is rather closely packed, and thus is fabulous to explore on your feet. French Quarter is, of course, the most popular and most visited of all tourist areas of New Orleans. But there are places more interesting and much less crowded (and fewer intoxicated people). Take the street car up to the Garden District and look at the beautiful mansions there. Or go through the French Quarter to Frenchman street, a great place to see live local music. With a little foot power, the whole of the city is open to you.
