The Ride Up

There are no roads leading out of Point Hope, no way to get in or out of the town except via plane. Taking off from Kotzebue, the landscape is striking. The flat tundra stretches as far as the eye cares to wander, a dun brown scarred with yellow-green rivulets of vegetation indicating some water source. The land is so barren that, without the pools and vegetative snakes, you'd think you were flying over a desert. The only topographic variation are these ancient hills. Bleached white from age and snow, they are no longer mountains, but the pitiful remains of former peaks. They carry long gashes, evidence of the epic battle they have waved with glacers as the ice ages have waxed and waned over the millennia. Not a dwelling or animal in sight. Fascinating to behold, but lonely and bleak at the same time.

Remote

As soon as you step off the plane in Point Hope, you feel how remote this place is. Vast tundra stretching in all directions, nestled right up against the Chukchi sea. No trees, no vegetation higher than your knee. It is without a doubt the most remote location I've ever visited.

Off the Track

Point Hope is not necessarily a tourist destination. That is, perhaps, an understatement. It really is not visited by most outsiders. It has a haunting kind of beauty to it, and there is definitely things to do if you find yourself out there. That is what these pages and tips will be about.
