Kiev Transportation

Transportation: from Kyiv to Lviv by train
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': TO
    Category: Train
Getting TO/AROUND: the overnight train is the best option to get from Kyiv to Lviv if you don't want to spend too much money for the plane.

there are two trains #91 and #97. #91 leaves Kyiv in 22:20 and arrive in Lviv at 6:37 am.
#97 leaves at 22:07 and arrive in Lviv at 8:00 am. the return train to Kyiv leave in the evening (check Lviv to Kyiv transportation tip)

the price for one way kupe ticket (sleeping compartment with 4 beds) is around 100 Hr ($20).

if you decide to travel by train take into account that a lot of people comute to and from Lviv on the weekends and for holidays (Christmas, Easter). so make your reservations in advance.

Transportation: getting to the city from Boryspil Airport
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': TO
    Category: Bus
Getting TO/AROUND: The Boryspil Airport is located outside of Kyiv, and getting from the airport to the city center could be a hassle especially if one doesn't speak Ukrainian and Russian. in the future, the city is planning to extend the metro green line to Boryspil and we all look forward to that. but meanwhile, the options are limited to taxi and bus.

upon your exit from the airport, you will be approached by many taxi drivers "preying" for foreign tourists. if money is not an issue, taxi is a way to go. Be prepared to negotiate and stick to your price. whatever a taxi driver tells you, the normal price is $25-30 (Russian - dvadtsat pyat - tridtsat dolarov).

if you are on budet, however, take a bus (Polit), or mini bus especially if you need to catch a train. it will take you directly to the Central Railway Station. buses run 24 hours. the price for a one-way ticket would be between $4-5. the bus makes one stop - at Kharkivska metro station (green line), buy taking which you can go around much faster (no traffic jam there :) just for 50 kopeik ($0.1)

Transportation: Shortcut from Mykhailivska Sq. to Poshtova (Podil)
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': TO
    Category: Other
Getting TO/AROUND: the fastest way to get from Mykhailivska Sq. to Poshtova Sq. by a funicular (cable car).

the original cable road - the Mykhailovsky lift - was built between 1902 and 1905, to shortcut the distance between the upper and lower parts of the city, which otherwise would take be a long tram ride around and down to Podil. it was considered to be a high-tech innovation of the time.

in addition for saving time, one can also enjoy a beautiful panorama of Podil. for that purpose, make sure to get into the lowest level of the cable car.

the funicular is opened between 6:30 am to 23:00; cable cars ascend/descend every 5 min; the ride costs 50 kon. ( to pass the gate, insert 50 kon coin (not a metro token).

Transportation: From Zhuliany airport to Boryspil: the budget way
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • 'Mode': TO
    Category: Bus
Getting TO/AROUND: if you need to get from Zhuliany (local airport) to Boryspil (international airport), and are not willing to pay a rip off taxi price, here is a budget option by public transportation.

    - take a marshrutka (minivan) #565, which stops just outside of Airport Zhuliany (fare 1.5 UAH -1.75UAH) to Chokolvsky Prospekt;
    - change to a marshrutka #454 (fare 1.5 UAH -1.75 UAH) to Pivdennyi Railway station (the last stop). if you want to save time, and don't mind paying extra, take a taxi from Zhuliany to Pivdenny Railway station (30 UAH).

    - change to a Polit bus to Boryspil Aiport (22 UAH per website, 2008). the departure times can be checked at: http://www.airport-borispol.kiev.ua/transport/public.html

although this is the cheapest, it is also the longest way (might take from around 2-2.5 hours depending how well you connections will go), thus plan accordingly.

Transportation: super cheap way to Kyiv from Lviv (Odesa)
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • 'Mode': TO
    Category: Airplane
Getting TO/AROUND: this is the fastest and the cheapest option available so far - to get to Kyiv (Boryspil International Airport, terminal A) from Lviv and Odesa, for a 1.5 hour for as low as UAH 68 (around $15 one way; all taxes included). this is a SUPER PROMO price offered by a newly launched budget airline WIZZAIR (all planes are of a Airbus A320 model). to get this lowest price, it's better to make a reservation (via internet) at least 2 weeks in advance, as the regular price might be as high as UAH 436 (one way).

the flight from Lviv departs on 17:00 on M, W, Fr, Su, and arrives in Kyiv at 18:15
the flight from Odesa departs on 20:40 on M, W, Fr, Su, and arrives in Kyiv at 21:50
