The Algerian Desert

by janiebaxter - last update: Aug 26, 2007

Tamanrasset and the Ahaggar Desert Region

Ahaggar Desert
Tamanrasset is the base for a trip into the Ahaggar Desert. We drove North from Tamanrasset to Mertoutek, a permanent Tuareg village and on the way we slept on mats in the sand under the stars. The sunsets were spectacular.
This desert is the size of France. We saw no other tourists and very few people except for a few Nomads. I have never seen such spectacular scenery as here - with massive rocky mountains, huge sand dunes and savannah on an immense scale. The pre-historic rock art, hidden in the hills is incredible for its vibrant colours and how well it is preserved. I took the trip alone but I had an excellent desert guide and driver and a tea maker as well as my Algerian friend and guide Redha.

Timimoun

The Oasis of Timimoun

Timimoun is pretty picture-postcard desert with palm trees, golden sand dunes interesting mud brick "Sudanese" architecture.
There is plenty to see as well as the Desert - Fugaras, the unique water system, the old Ksors or hill villages and attractive desert villages outside the town.

My Timimoun Pages are
Timimoun Desert and Town
Timimoun Villages and Palaces

Ghardaia

Ghardaia is made up of 7 cities built between the 11th and the 17th centuries. The people here are M'zab Berbers who came from the North. They are skilled tradesmen and the women weave beautiful carpets. The narrow winding streets and the market square are very attractive.
