"Murchison Falls" Murchison Falls National Park by janiebaxter

The Falls

Murchison Falls National Park is about 350km from Kampala. We flew to the landing strip in the nearby village, in a small charter plane from Kampala.
We stayed at Rabongo cottages, which were surrounded by forest and black and white colobus monkeys. At this time, in 1992, the chimpanzees here were not habituated so it wasn't possible to see them. At that time also, there wasn't much game, due to the rebel activity in the surrounding area. We were actually shot at as we waited on the edge of the airstrip for our plane to collect us. It was just a warning shot to let us know to stay where we were and not wander too far and none of us was hit.

We saw plenty of hippos and crocodiles on this part of the Nile, more than I have ever seen anywhere else before or since. And really big too. They seemed to hang around in gangs of about 15 and were literally piled on top of one another on the banks in places - like the crocodile Temple in Egypt.

Bush Fire

My first experience of a bush fire. Although it looks quite green here the bush must have been dry as the fire appeared from nowhere and spread very rapidly. We had to get past the fire, and through the smoke, to the other side before it leapt across the road and blocked our path. Luckily we had a good driver and we made it.
