Khartoum City of the Nile

Khartoum and Around

The Sufi School
Khartoum, the Sudanese capital, stands at the junction of the Blue and White Nile Rivers and has significant British colonial links, infamously with General Gordon and Kitchener, and is a gateway to the Egyptian monuments of Nubia and famous desert church frescoes.
Khartoum was founded in 1823 by Ali, the Egyptian ruler, and Omdurman was founded in 1884 by the Mahdi. At that time it was just a small rural village but the Mahdi used it as a base to launch his successful attack on the British in the city of Khartoum so it became his capital.
There is much to see in Khartoum and Omdurman from the Mahdi's tomb, khalifa's house and the museum, to the river Nile and the souks.
It is a pleasant city to walk around, taking in the views and the people going about their daily lives. Definitely one of the nicest cities in Africa. I was only in Khartoum for a long weekend, but would have loved to spend more time here. My favourite places were the River Nile and the Sufi School.

Ancient and Modern History

As well as the more recent British colonial history, the lesser known ancient history can be seen at Meroe, site of the Cushite court from 590BC.

Craftsmen

Along the Nile you can watch the boatbuilders at work and drink coffee at the small roadside coffee stalls. You can take boat trips to see the confluence of the Blue and White Nile, and stroll along the walkway by the river in the late afternoon
