Door to the Red Sea | Fishing Boats at Al Hudaydah |
Al Hudaydah is Yemen’s fourth city and is the main port for the area on the Red Sea. It is much more modern than the rest of the Tihama area which is still very traditional and has not adapted to the modern age. The climate is very hot and humid and the landscape very flat. Travelling to and from Al Hudaydah you can see a lot of the African influence in the surrounding area with the small villages of reed huts and the people in colourful clothes. If you drive from Al Hudaydah to Al Mahwit you pass through Wadi Surdod which gives a wonderful view of rural life with the smallholdings and agricultural terraces and people working the land. There is not much to see in Hodeidah city. It has always been a fishing port and was the main port for the export of coffee in the 17th century. The Red Sea has very rich fishlife and you can see this at the Fish market early in the morning. |
