Marib is the supposed location of the Queen of Sheba's capital – Sabaea. It is in great need of archaelogical exploration to establish this fact, but until proved otherwise let's assume it is. Marib's location made it a convenient stop for caravans travelling between Hadramaut and the ancient port of Qana on the Arabian Sea, which led to it having a high level of control over the Frankincense route and the taxes that came from it. The Dam at Marib, built in the 8th century BC, was hugely important to the area as it allowed cultivation. |
| | The Temples As well as the Old Dam the other ancient sites are the temples of the Moon and the Sun. The temples show the Sabaean state was prosperous and important in 1000BC. |
Old Marib The Old Town of Marib is practically deserted and stands on a hill outside the new town | | |
