Off The Beaten Path: Al Janad Mosque - one of the oldest in the world
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Close to Ta'iz off the Aden road is the Al Janad mosque – one of the oldest in Yemen, dating from the early 7th century with the original minaret, although other parts have been rebuilt over the years. It was built by Mua'ath Bin Jabal who was a companion of The Prophet. The first call to prayer in Yemen was called from here and it is one of the oldest mosques in the world, originally built in the style of the Kaaba mosque in Mecca.
Al Janad is a small village nowadays.

Off The Beaten Path: Wadi Al Dhbab Weekly Market

  • Wadi al Dhbab weekly market is a rural market and it is very crowded with animal traders selling goats, camels, cattle, sheep and donkeys as well as stalls of spices, garlic, baskets, hats, pottery and textiles and fruit and vegetables. This area grows very large papayas which are delicious!
The country people are very colourful with bright orange and pink clothes and the women are mostly unveiled. Families sit in groups talking among the traders.
You don’t really get hassled as you walk around as there are quite a few tourists, and if the children approach you they are not persistent. Everybody was friendly.
We visited on a Sunday, but as the weekly markets move around you may catch it in another village on a different day.
Wadi al Dhbab is about 20 minutes drive from Ta’iz towards Hodeidah.
