We stayed at the Rasa Ria resort, which was a lovely introduction to the country and the wildlife. The resort has a nice beach, good food and is a good base to start a trip to Sabah.
The highlight of our stay were the Orangutans at the hotel nature reserve. At the time there were 2 very young ones who were being looked after here before being transferred to Sepilok. They had 2 keepers to look after them and seemed extremely happy. We were allowed to visit twice a day, but if the hotel is busy you have to book. You can watch them feeding and playing.
Kota Kinabalu National Park has a rainforest skywalk. You walk up along the paths, climbing high to the top of the canopy and then walk across the skywalk which is strung between the tree tops.
