The Matterhorn is the majestic mountain that lures so many tourists and climbers
to this flower bedecked village that is more like a town now.
Indeed its difficult to know which is the greater - the number of flowers or the number of tourists!
Many more pics of this marvellous mountain in the travelogue below

Hikes

Many hikes of all grades and lengths are availble, many can be given a head start with the wonderful mountain transport available. The walks are well marked out and the times given are usually fairly accurate.
A good site for hikes in Zermatt can be found here

Old Barns

Around the town, tucked away in little alleyways and up amongst the higher pastures are these lovely olde-worlde barns on stilts or "mushrooms". Take time to explore the town for these barns, who knows they might not be seen in the town for too much longer - quite a bit of modern development is unfortunately taking over.

Mountain Transport

If like me you enjoy riding those cable-cars and funiculars then Zermatt has no shortage of them.

Gornegratt is the mountain railway for great views over Zermatt, the Matterhorn and the many glaciers.

The Sunegga funicular takes you up to some wonderful alpine walks and mountain lakes you can swim in. Here there are two further gondolas that take you to Blauherd and Rothorn.

The Kleine Matterhorn - for a stunning alpine panorama, there's more to Zermatt than the Matterhorn - is a 4 stage cable-car. Furi - Furg - Schwarzsee - Trockner Steg - Kleine Matterhorn. Allow an hour to get right to the top but the views are well worth it.

This really is high up-out of breath no doubt. Did you hike up there much? Great comments you present. My trip to Utah and Arizona parks was a lot of hiking and some risky areas around Kanaba and Natural Bridges. I invite you to see them

Sandy, fabulous page about Zermatt. I especially like your photos of the mountain lakes as we have been at most of them as well. I can't believe that you met Mr Ulrich Inderbinden. I only saw the fountain in the Hinterdorf which commemorates him.

You should have climbed the Matterhorn or other nearby mountains like I did. You would have had an even better view. Dietmar in Las Vegas, USA dj89052@AOL.com

Hi Sandy, Really enjoyed your photos of Zermatt. My husband and I will be there at end of June. Could you help us with suggestions for a good day walk - maybe the 5 lakes walk. Your thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Heather
