  • Mosta is mainly a busy working town but visitors come here to see its huge parish church - the Mosta Rotunda built in the mid 19th century. Its dome is huge - the fourth largest in Europe. Its massive walls, up to 6m deep meant the dome could be constructed without scaffolding. ts certainly a focus of attention when viewed from high places like Mdina - where this pic was taken from the bastions near the Fontanella tearooms.

  • The huge dome played a part it its claim to fame when during WW2 in 1942 three german bombs fell on the church during a service. Two bounced off the dome without exploding and the third pierced the dome and landed in the church admidst the congregation also without exploding - truly a miracle. A replica of the 200kg bomb can be seen in the sacristy of the church.

  • The Rotunda has two belfries and huge ionic columns on its facade. We passed by here twice and didn't manage to find the church open :-S
So you don't make the same mistake if you want to see the interior the opening times are:
    Daily 9-12 and 3-5pm
Inside the interior is said to be beautiful - and indeed looks so from other VT pictures I have seen - with its six side chapels, intricate marble floor and almost 3D murals by Guiseppe Cali. Oh well next time maybe.

Just checking out this very domey page. ;) I may never get TO Malta but I'll get quite the virtual tour by the time I finish viewing your lovely pages on it.
