  • Favorite Thing: A 10 minute stroll down the road from the neolithic temples of Hagar Qim and Mnajdra saw us arrive at the top of the road that leads down to the rocky inlet of Zurrieq where little boats take you to the blue grotto - when the seas are calm enough! The bus stops at the top of the hill so you have to walk down and back up afterwards!

  • Favorite Thing: If you don't want to take a boat trip to the grotto (when available) then there is a viewing terrace just past the bus stop on the opposite side of the road. Great views from here with the pricky pear cacti in front. It was so windy though we nearly got blown away!

  • Favorite Thing: Anway down the hill we walked to the inlet, passing all the cafes and souvenir shops - surprisingly open as no boat trips were running due to the windy weather. Having seen the waves here no way was I going to get into one of those little luzzi fishing boats!
The boats were all pulled up in the boat yard and all covered up - I guess they rarely venture out in the winter months.

Just in case you are wondering the cost of a boat trip to the grotto is 2.5 lire. Can't imagine the trip would take long - no more than 30 minutes there and back. Anyway its good to see the view from the upper viewing terrace.

    General Tips: Pill Box
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: On the rocky cliffs around the inlet of Zurrieq are reminders of Malta's involvement in the war and how they suffered, like this WW2 pill box.

    General Tips: Cliffs and Caves
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: On the way back up the hill we noticed a path leading to the cliffs, so ever adventurous we wandered over and clambered down the rocky path for a while to see the coastal views. Seeing as the boats were not operating we wanted to see the scenery we might have missed otherwise.

    General Tips: Cliff View
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: Here's a view of the cliff slope we were clambering down, quite safe really and we had the place to ourselvers. The sea was a deep turqoise blue colour and we could see caves and inlets were perhaps the boat might pass through to the grottto on the other side - the grotto is just the other side of these cliffs.

    General Tips: close up
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: Here's a close view just so you can see how blue the colour of the water is here, no wonder they call it the Blue Grotto.

    General Tips: Coastline
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: The scenery around the coastline of Malta is quite lovely here and had it been a touch warmer would have been nice to linger, taking in the view and perhaps waking more along the coastline on the road above.

  • Favorite Thing: This is just to show what a rocky inlet it is here at Wied Zurrieq, the scenery is quite stunning. This is where the boats would leave from to go the short distance around the coaast to the Blue Grotto.

Great page, beautiful pictures of cliffs and coastline. Haha, do the cats prefer Pizza Hut or local pizza?

Interesting page Sandy, I think you should be wearing your life jackets next time you are that close to the sea. Great pictures!
