Kalymos Ferry - Kalymnos Island

Kalymos Ferry

Reaching Kalymnos

We wanted to visit Kalymnos for the day and we could have booked a day excursion from our base on Kos Island - trips were about 29 euros each - but they didn't leave until 11.00am so we got the bus to the ferry port of Mastichari on Kos and took the fast ferry at 10.00 (took about 45 mins) and came back on the 4.30pm. This gave us ample time for a stroll around the main harbour town of Porthia and also take a bus journey to Myrties for a spot of lunch out there.

Transport from Myrties - Kalymnos Island
Transport from Myrties

From the small harbour at Myrties ferry boats can be taken (apparently every 30 mins or upon request) to the tiny island of Telendos. Available from 0800 -2400. Various other small boat trips an be made to other parts of Kalymnos and neighbouring islands such as Lipsi and Leros on Tuesday to Thursday and Saturday on the Anna Express boat...usually leaving at 9am. - see timetable by ferry harbour.

catching the bus back to Pothia - Kalymnos Island

catching the bus back to Pothia

Bus Service

There is a bus service on the island so that you can reach the main villages several times a day.
The bus leaves near the town hall in Pothia - you must get ticket before you get on board, there are little kiosks nearby with timetables and several shops will sell bus tickets too. We caught a midday bus to Myrties and then walked from there to Massouri (these villages merge into each other. What we didn't know was that the bus goes in a one way direction - we could have gone to the end stop for a ride round and then stopped in Massouri and walked to Myrties before catching a later bus back- so there's a tip for you. The view as you come down the hill into Myrties is splendid - if in a taxi they will often stop for a photo if you wish.
