bicycles for hire
Again, as in Rhodes, mopeds are a very popular way of getting around. Hardly anyone on one of these wore a helmet, despite spot checks being made.
The town is compact and bicycle hire was also popular - a better option I think, especially for the short ride out to Asklepieion.
Cost is about 3 euros per day for bicycle hire.

hydrofoil in Kos - the "flying dolphin"
The Bodrum Hydrofoil is the quickest means of travelling between Kos and Bodrum - taking about 20 minutes whereas the ferry takes about 60 minutes. Cost is just 10 euros .
There are also daily connections to Kalymnos, Leros, Patmos, Piraeus (Athens) and Rhodes.
Connections to - Symi, Chio, Mytilini, Alexandroupolis, Halki, Diafani, Karpatho, Kasso, Irakleion, Kastelorizo, Limno, Nysiro, Tilo, Astypalea, Lipsi, Thessaloniki, Paro, Naxo, Syro, Amorgo and Mykono are availbale once or twice a week: Its best to check with the individual ship companies as none like to give out info about each other!

boats in Kos harbour
Just as in Rhodes the harbour is full of boats offering excursions. The trip across to Turkey and various other small islands as a days trips with a BBQ lunch - a really enjoyble way to spend a day - seemed to be the most popular and frequent on offer. Just take some time looking at the boats and see which trip you'd like to make.

the blue train
There are two tourist trains in Kos - the green one does a city tour (not taken by us as it was fairly compact to walk around) and a blue train which makes the 4km trip out to Asklepieion archaelogical site.
Ticket prices are 3.50 euros for the round trip - well worth it if short on time or on a day trip like we were.

boat to Kos
We arrived in Kos via the regular Dodecanese Express superfast catermaran service from Rhodes Town. Our schedule went straight to Kos but sometimes they call in at Symi first. Jouney time was just over 2 hours - departed at 8.30am and returned from Rhodes at 4.20pm prompt - giving us aboput 5 hours in Kos- which in the heat was enough for a day. Very efficient and comfortable service - a bit like a flying boat with much more leg room than a plane.
Ticket price was 40 euros return - it was cheaper to buy from the harbour stalls at Mandraki harbour in Rhodes rather then the ticket office at Colona harbour.
