Patmos is the northernmost of the Dodecanese Greek islands Roughly the shape of a sea-horse, it measures little more than 39 km2, boasting a coastline of 65 km and a N-S long axis of 12 km The main port is Skala, with its old town of Chora above, neatly splitting the north and south parts of the island. The deep water port make this a favourite stop for Mediterranean cruise ships that often queue up to berth at Skala's quay and dwarf the town. They arrive to see the religious attractions of the Monastery of St John the apostle and the cave where he received the Revelation - for this reason Patmos is often known as the Jerusalem of the Aegean.

| | Our visit was in October a peaceful time to visit - although the main attractions can be busy when the cruise ship trips are in town. The other main areas are Campos and Grikos. Due to a longer stay in Patmos than originally planned we had time to see these places and enjoy the almost deserted beaches and yet still had blue sky weather and warm sunshine. We were glad of our extended stay (due to ferry schedules) so we could enjoy Patmos in a more leisurely fashion |
