The spires of Our Lady before Tyn dominate the old town as much as St Nicholas dominates Mala Strana. Its rarely open, apart from services but the best view of the exterior is from the Town Hall Tower and here you get a good glimpse of its "Walt Disney" style spires and turrets.

The other church in the old town is more visible than Our Lady Before Tyn. St Nicholas (not to be confused with church of the same name in Mala Strana) was built in 1735. Ironically this elaborate church was chosen by the czech Hussites who are normally opposed to pomp of Catholoicism.

On the west side of the square - at right angles to the Town hall is one of my favourite buildings, the multi frescoed Dum U Minuty. This building has been the town pharmacy and the home of Czech writer kafka. I could spend ages looking at the detailed Renaissance illustrations here.

On the south side of the old town square is the beautiful Storh House.Look at the really interesting frescoes on this Neo- Renaissance house also known as At the Stone Madonna. - pleas enlarge pic for a better view. The late 19th century frescoes of St Wenceslas on horseback are by the artist Mikulas.

27 crosses and the date of 21 June 1621can be seen in the pavement by the east side of the town hall. This marks the famous executions of 24 noble protestant leaders and 3 commoners at the height of the Thirty Years War. Their names are recorded on a bronze plaque too on the gothic chapel wall of the town hall.

Jan Hus was a religious reformer and the hero of the czech people - burnt at the stake rather than give up his beliefs.. His momument can be seen at one end of the town square and was unveiled n 1915 on the 500th anniversary of his death.The huge monument depicts victorious Hussite warriors and protestants forced into exile 200 years later and a young mother symbolising national rebirth.

This is Prague's top attraction in the old town square. Hoards of tourists flock into the square to see the hourly procession of the apostles at the upper windows, the deathly skeleton and the crowing cock at the end of the performance. At the end you will hear people say "is that it?" in utter disbelief! Hmmm maybe this should have been a tourist trap.

The clock itself though is a marvel of detail. Built in 1410, not so much to tell the time but to show the position of the stars and planets in the universe. The poor creator of this masterpiece was blinded for his efforts lest he repeat them!

On the hourly display of the clock its upper windows open and there is a procession of the 12 apostles. These are copies of the 18th century wood carvings which were destroyed in the bombings of 1945. Capturing one of the apostles on the new zoom digital, I can see he doesn't look too happy - just enlarge the picture and see what I mean! Post script: I've just discovered (thanks to Steventilly) that the apostle John is renowned for this pose and is often depicted in art giving the finger!

During the hourly display of the clock the Skeleton of Death tolls the bell and shows that the hour is up, using an hourglass, for his Turkish neighbour. On the opposite side the figures of Vanity and Usury shake their heads in disbelief - much like the crowds below! At the end a golden cock crows and the show is over - until the next hour.
