  • This small museum is often been overlooked for the bigger museums like the Maritime and the Tate but its well worth a look and doesn't take up too much time if its sunny outside. The culture and life of Liverpool is displayed from how they used to live and work, the football fever of the city to cult scouseTV programmes like Brookside.

Located just before the Albert Dock and overlooks the Canning Dock where several boat exhibits are open in the summer.

  • Just behind the Liverpool Life Museum is this endearing sculpture looking out to the Mmersey on the Riverside Walk.
It depicts the leaving of Liverpol - so many emigrants left here for a brave new world.

  • Inside the Great Western Railway building are several old wonderfully preserved fire pumps and engines.

This one was a Shand Mason Steam Fire Pump from 1901. The North Lancashire Fire Force used this pump in the Second World War. It delivered about 350 gallons (1,600 litres) of water per minute. It needed two powerful horses to haul it to the fire!

  • This is a Liverpool fire engine - also housed in the Great Western Railway terminus, situated close to the Albert Dock complex.
Again this was in service in the second world war and up to the 1950's.

Off The Beaten Path: A pyramid in Liverpool??
  • Tip Rating:
  • Yes Liverpool has a little pyramid too.
An addicted gambler by the name of Mckenzie wished to be buried standing up with his winning card hand still in situ - hence this strange memorial!
Address: Rodney Street - St Andrews church grounds
Directions: not far from the Roman Catholic cathedral

Off The Beaten Path: George's Dock Tower
  • Tip Rating:
  • People often wonder what this building is - found just behind the Liver buildings on Mann Island. Well this stately tower hides one of the two main ventilation shafts for the Mersey Tunnels (the other being on the river bank opposite in Birkenhead).

It was designed by Herbert J Rowse and along with the tunnel mouths, the tower was badly damaged in the war and was largely rebuilt by Rowse in 1951-2.

Off The Beaten Path: West Kirby
  • Tip Rating:
  • Just 30 mins by train from Liverpool is my home town of West Kirby. West Kirby has a beach and marina to enjoy.
This is the view half way across the marine lake looking towards the promenade. Boating and windsurfing are very popular activities. Those houses over there are where we live.

Off The Beaten Path: Hilbre Island
  • Tip Rating:
  • The other side of the lake has the beach. Here Hilbre Island can be seen. You can walk out to the island when the tide is out but you must check the tide times for returning - people have been stranded! PLEASE SEE TRAVELOGUE on my West Kirby page.

Off The Beaten Path: Ness Gardens - the Laburnum...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Ness Gardens - the Laburnum Arch (end of May/June) is a well known stunning feature of these beautiful gardens. First created by the Liverpool cotton merchant Arthur Kilpin Bulley in 1898, part of which he opened to local residents, which laid the foundations of one of the major botanic gardens in the United Kingdom

Hi Sandy, although it took me ages to click through all of your Liverpool tips, I must admit that this is a very informative page with lots of infos. I went to Liverpool this March and enjoyed it very much. A really cool place!

Hello You refer to the "3 Graces". I'm 50-something and I hadn't heard this phrase until a few years ago. It isn't a local, Liverpool phrase. Who started it?
