So here we are on the last leg of our Tilly tour - on our way to Newcastle. We entered Newcastle via the southern approach road and of course passed by the "Angel of the North", a project of Antony Gormley. I just managed to capture this image as we flashed past in the car. The Angel is made of weathering steel (same as the ships were made out of here and thus symbolising Newcastle's heritage) and stands 20 metres high and with a wingspan of 54 metre. Loads more info on the website link below.

On arrival in Newcastle we headed for the Gateshead Quayside - a wonderful regeneration of the old docks here - much like the project of Salford Docks. The contemporary Baltic Art centre and Gateshead Millenium Bridge are complimented by many sculptures seen along the Tyne. This one here with, hubby Dave and Steve at its base, was one such unusual artworks, entitled the Blacksmith's Needle. There are six layers to the 'Needle' and the objects are themed within each, according to a bodily sense. There is a whole series of sculptures and artwork in the area - indeed its the largest programme of public art in the UK and was financed from the National Lottery Fund.

Steve was very keen to stress that this is the GATESHEAD Millenium Bridge - not just the Millenium Bridge or that "Blinking Bridge" in Newcastle. So called as this world's first tilting bridge its designed to resemble a blinking eyelid when raised to permit ships to pass beneath. Unfortunately it wasn't in operation the day we were here :-(

A 1950's disused flour mill has had a multi-million pound makeover transforming it into this centre for Contemporary Visual Art - the lagrest outside of London. It has a fanatastic position right on the quayside and linked by the Gateshead Millenium Bridge. Several galleries to wander around here if you enjoy contemporary art and for those that don't the roof top restaurant is worth a look for its wonderful views over the quayside and all those bridges. A viewing terrace can be reached by lift - enlarge the pic and you'll see the glass surround at the top of the viewing platform.

Time was short and the weather too nice to be indoors looking at art but the view from the top of the viewing terrace was lovely - seeing all the bridges - and certainly the best view of the "Blinking Bridge" in my opinion.

This was originally the enntrance to the castle which gave NewCASTLE its name. Henry III had it built (1247-1250) to provide extra fortification to the entrance. It has had several uses over the years - tenements in the 17th century when the two stories were aded and more recently a bagpipe museum (no longer here)

From a street just off the quayside we climbed up quite a few steep steps to reach the castle which gave Newcastle its name. Not quite so new now, it was founded in 1080 by Robert Curthose, son of William the Conqueror, on the site of a Roman fort. Wish those vans hadn't been parked there and the sun was the wrong angle for this pic :-S.

The castle is open to the public - admission is £1.50 for adults. We didn't go in but on view apparently are the keep's two Royal accommodation suites, a public hall, a private room, the garrison room, and a Norman chapel. The castle roof I imagine will provide a spectacular view of Newcastle and all those bridges yet again!

MikeStarr5 Mon Oct 29, 2007 22:42 UTC Great pic - Thanks. Here in "Barking Town" we have the UK's 2nd largest public artwork called "Holding Pattern" - It's 70m long x 50m wide and almost 6m high. It cost £650,000 to build and only Anthony Gormley's Angel of the North is bigger. | mmyerspa Sun Jun 10, 2007 14:55 UTC I learned a lot about Newcastle from your travel page. Looks like a place I'd enjoy visiting. | aaaarrgh Fri Jan 12, 2007 17:43 UTC Your Baltic tip was featured just now on the VT homepage. Great photo! Newcastle is also high on my list of places to visit. | diocletianvs Fri Jun 16, 2006 17:49 UTC I have just added Newcastle on my "Top 5 places I need to visit a.s.a.p". Bridges look fantastic and the docklands development looks very interesting. |
