General Tips: Quayside Development
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: The 1990's saw the transformation of the derlict docks on the east quayside of Newcastle to the modern splendour of today with the Batic Art Centre linked by the blinking Gateshead Millenium Bridge with its pedestrian and cycle paths. Interesting art work can be seen along the quayside too. This was probably the best part of Newcastle for me and in many ways was similar to the Salford Docks rejuvenation scheme.

    General Tips: Bridges Galore
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: Seeing the view of all those bridges was something I'd wanted to see for ages - it really does symbolise Newcastle.
The 7 bridges that can be seen from the Gateshead Quayside are:
    Gateshead Millennium Bridge
    Tyne (King Gerorge V) Bridge
    Swing Bridge
    High Level Bridge
    Metro (QEII) Bridge
    Railway (King Edward VII) Bridge
    Redheugh Bridge

3 other bridges - Scotswood Bridge, the A1 western bypass, and the Newburn Bridge make up the total of 10 bridges that connect Gateshead to Newcastle

This view was taken from Gateshead Millenium Bridge.

For some lovely old images of the Tyne Bridges check out this website.

  • Favorite Thing: This is THE bridge that everyone associates with Newcastle. It took 3 years to build and was opened by King George V in October 1928. 7,000 tons of steelwork have gone into this bridge which is 193 ft high and 1,275 ft long. Its single arch spans 531ft across the Tyne. Two of the four supporting towers contain elevators linking the bridge to the Quayside below. When it was finished in 1928 it was the largest single span in the world at that time.

Seems like everyone wants to get a pic of Newcastle's forerunner of Sydney Harbour Bridge!

    General Tips: High Level Bridge
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: The High Level Bridge was built in 1849 and for the first time linked Newcastle with London by rail (previously, trains stopped at Gateshead). In addition to the railway, the lower deck of this bridge carries a roadway - another innovation of its day.

Fondest Memory: I was fortunate as I snapped this close up of the bridge to get the train crossing in one direction whilst a bus was also crossing the bridge underneath.

    General Tips: St Nicholas Cathedral
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: A church has been present on this site (south end of the Groat Market) for over 900 years. This current building dates from the 14th and 15th centuries. It has an intricate lantern spire - one of only 4 in the country.

    General Tips: Grainger Town
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: The town of Newcastle is a great centre for shopping too. There are many lovely georgian buildings and architectural styles to enjoy right in the centre. Here we are aproaching Grey's Monumnet

    General Tips: Grey's Monument
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: Grey's Monument, standing 135 feet high at the centre of Newcastle's shopping area has been a landmark meeting place for locals and visitors since its erection in 1838. It was built to commemorate the services of Charles, Earl Grey (1764-1845) who as Prime Minister was a tireless anti-slavery campaigner, steering the Great Reform Bill (1832) into law. I believe its actually possible to climb this monument via the 164 steps inside the column - must be a great view down Grey street and over Newcastle from up there.

    General Tips: Keelman's Hospital
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: We passed this lovely old Almshouse hospital, built in 1701, on our walk to the quayside of Newcastle. I noticed the sundial on its central clock tower.

    General Tips: Laing Art Gallery
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: The Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle was founded in 1901 (opened 1904) by Alexander Laing a Scottish wine and spirit merchant. It is the North East's principal gallery. The gallery holds a particularly good 18th- and 19th- century British collection, including paintings by the locally born Romantic painter John Martin.

  • Favorite Thing: The breeze on the Tyne during our visit was not condusive to one of my longed for reflection shots so I had to settle for this view of the Tyne Bridge in the glass window on the viewing terrace of the Batlic Mill. Thee's was another shot of the Millenium Bridge but this was slightly better. Thanks for the idea Sabsi!

Great pic - Thanks. Here in "Barking Town" we have the UK's 2nd largest public artwork called "Holding Pattern" - It's 70m long x 50m wide and almost 6m high. It cost £650,000 to build and only Anthony Gormley's Angel of the North is bigger.

I learned a lot about Newcastle from your travel page. Looks like a place I'd enjoy visiting.

Your Baltic tip was featured just now on the VT homepage. Great photo! Newcastle is also high on my list of places to visit.

I have just added Newcastle on my "Top 5 places I need to visit a.s.a.p". Bridges look fantastic and the docklands development looks very interesting.
