Not only is Trier Germany's oldest city but it also proclaims to be older than Rome but this is dimissed by Historians. Trier was a favourite home away from home for many Roman emperors in the 3rd and 4th centuries. Today the town thrives as the centre of the Mosel wine trade. The town centre is approached through the huge Porta Nigra (Black Gate) at the north end of the town. It dates from the 2nd century. The name is a post Roman reference to the pollution throughout the ages - at the base you can see that the gate was once pink! |

Trekki Sun Jul 22, 2007 09:27 UTC Ah, so Trier is more than just the Porta Nigra ! I should hop in the train one day :-) I like that Dreikönigshaus - very strange indeed. And haha, Karl Marx surrounded by topless bars :-) | Helga67 Thu Oct 13, 2005 15:49 UTC Nice little page. I'll be visiting Trier for christmas shopping in December. | Jim_Eliason Thu Aug 28, 2003 22:54 UTC Nice page Sandy! | Paul2001 Mon Jul 21, 2003 19:37 UTC I have met people who have never heard of the wonderful town of Trier.
