  • Favorite Thing: The Maltese archipegalo consists of Malta, some 27km long by 14 km at the widest part, Gozo, which is 14km long by 7 km wide and Comino which is even smaller.. They are situated in the middle of the Mediterranean. They may be small in size but have immense history.

  • Favorite Thing: A great way to get an overview of the Grand harbour and creeks of Valletta and the Three Cities is to take a harbour cruise - departs from Sliema not Valletta note. Its a leisurely way to spend a couple of hours, taking in the views anfd hearing about the building you see. Several boats do this cruise throught out the day - notably Captain Morgan Cruises but smaller Luzzus also which can navigate further into the creeks.

Definitely one of my most memorable excursion in Malta and highly reccommended.

    General Tips: Valletta's Unique Streets

  • Favorite Thing: The stepped streets of Valletta are charming but had a purpose. The stairs on the street do not conform to normal dimensions as they werere constructed so as to allow knights in heavy armour to be able to climb them. This was one of my favoutrite street scene in Valletta with the golden afternoon light on it.

    General Tips: Malta Experience

  • Favorite Thing: For a good overview of Malta's inception and its troubled history throughout the ages then the 45 minute audio visual presentation the "Malta Experince" is worthwhile - saves reading the history books before you travel! It was quite emotional seeing the devastation this island suffered in WW2 and amazing how they have survived and rebuilt their lives and surroundings.

    It situated in the underground movie theatrre of St. Elmo Bastion at mediterranean Street - Valetta.. Head for the fort at the bottom of Valletta and turn right. The screen is huge, the pictures were fantastic and plus it provided welcome respite from a rainstorm. It was worth the entrance fee (3 lira) and when we emerged the sun was shining again.

  • Favorite Thing: If near Valletta its worthwhile popping into the tourist board for some information - the staff there will be only to happy to help. You can find out what is going on and pick up free leaflets which outline walks around the favourite places to visit - Valletta itself and its churches, The Three Cities, Mdina, The Three Villages and many others.

  • Favorite Thing: The Maltese Cross with its eight points is the symbol associated with the Knights of Malta The eight points represented the eight obligations or aspirations of the Knights. which they were expected to observe.
    These obligations were to:

    live in truth;
    have faith;
    repent of sins;
    give proof of humility;
    love justice;
    be merciful;
    be sincere and whole-hearted; and
    endure persecution.

    General Tips: St Paul in Malta

  • Favorite Thing: The connection with the apostle Paul in Malta is impossible to escape. Since his shipwreck on the islands just off Malta and the consequent beginnings of Christianity here Paul is like the spiritual father of the Maltese people. A highly catholic country - some 96% - many churches are dedicated to St Paul and the Shipwreck Church in Valletta is a popular one to visit. Its festa day is a very colourful and important event in the Maltese calendar too. Other S Paul connections can be seen in Rabat - the church where it all began and the christian catacombs which form re honeycomb underneath the city. The Islands where Paul was shipwrecked, just off St Paul's Bay are a popular stopping off place on tours of the island. On the island here is a little chapel and his statue.

    General Tips: Gozo Jeep Tour

  • Favorite Thing: Strictly speaking this is not Malta but Gozo is such a close neighbour that I have put this tip here. Its easily reach by a short ferry crossing from harbourr port of Cirkewna - yet worlds apart in terms of atmosphere and scenery. We took a jeep safari tour of Gozo - a bit more expensive than a bus tour but the off roading allowed us to see more remote areas of this little island with its scenic gems such as the salt pans on the north of Gozo and the well known Azure Window.
    Little bays and harbours, neolithic temples, miracle churches and windmills..and a whole lot more. It was a real highlight of our weeks stay in Malta so please check out my Gozo page for this bumpy virtual tour.
