Marsica is a subregion of nearly 1500Km2 in the west of Abruzzo, around the Fucino valley, an ancient drained lake. Today, it is a fruitful land for cultivating cereals, potatoes and sugar beets. Its name was founded by the ancient people of Marsi." In Marsica region beyond the towns of Gioia dei Marsi and Villa Vallelongo, lies the National Park of Abruzzo, surrounded by peaks over two thousand meters tall with slopes covered by beech, black pine and maple forests.

There are three main villages, namely Pescasseroli (bigger and pleasant), Civitella Alfedena (famous for wolves) and Opi, between the two. The town of Barrea and its lake is also worth a visit - if only for the views.

Its a great place for hiking, totally unspoilt - the only chairlift only operates in August when the italians come for their holiday - few huts so be prepared with good shoes and packed lunches in your rucksacks..

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:unspoilt hiking area
  • Cons:tends to have a thunder storm every day at 3pm!
  • In a nutshell:great get away from it all place

Really nice pictures of a beautiful area... without mentionning the helpful tips. I also had a great time when I was there. I should gather my pics and start writing.

Delightful - looks like an unspoiled and peaceful region. Don't feed the bears!

If you had the photos already, you wouldn't even need to go! Naw, guess we need some food tips too. ;)
