  • If I had to choose between the islands to visit in the northern lagoon Burano would be my number one choice. Its so idyllic just to stroll around the maze of narrow streets "calli" and banks "fondamente" on small canals taking in the colourful views of this fishing and lace island.

  • The location of Burano in the lagoon and its protection from wind ensured that the plague of malaria did not strike the population here unlike nearby Torcello. It was raised from the marshes and survives today. The ancient layout of the town has been preserved and has developed over smaller islets divided by the three main canals, Giudecca, Cavanella, Ponticello, covering an area of 50 sq.km.

  • Burano - colourful Burano homes

  • The gaily painted fishing houses along the canals were supposedly painted such viivd and differing colours so that the sailors would recognise their homes when returning from sea. Hardly likely though for the homes facing inland to the canals and other houses!
However it does help in property boundaries and for fishermen to discern their homes when returing in the dark after night time fishing.

  • One of the most colourful houses in Burano is a house called "Bepi Sua", found in Via de la Gattolo. With its geometrical patterns painted in bright oil colours it has become a popular tourist photo spot. To find this house walk half way down the main street in Burano (as if heading for the main square) and turn left into a calle, where you'll find it at the end of this calle towards the right hand side.

  • Just exploring the calles and and canlas you will witness everyday life of the locals here - from the fishing boats bobbing up and down in the canals to the laundy hanging out to dry.

  • Burano - St Martins leaning campanile

  • From most places in Burano you will notice the campanile of the parish church of St Martins peering over the colourful houses. Notice its precarious lean too - no wonder it was roped off and not open to visitors! It was built in the 16th century, and if you manage to gain access it contains a vast painting by Tiepolo. The elegant bell-tower was designed by Tirali, and was reinforced during demanding restorations.

  • This is Burano's main square with a bust of its name-sake in the centre and a fountain. Its a wide open area and you can't miss it at the end of the main street in Burano - Via B Galuppi where you will find the majority of the restaurants and shops of Burano.

  • If you intend to buy lace from Burano then its a good idea to visit the Museum first and see the real work of art. The Museo del Merletto is open every day except Tuesday 10 - 4pm. Inside laces made between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century are exhibited, but there are also some 18th century laces worked by bobbin.

  • There are no road and no cars on Venice and Burano so seeing fuel pumps are a variety. Of course the local water craft need to get their diesel from somewhere and Burano has a petrol station at one end of the island for this purpose - looked to be a busy place too.

  • Burano is so incredibly photogenic -not just the colourful houses and the canal reflections but even details such as this pretty arched window and flower box just screams out for a photo.

San, fantastic colourful photos of this lovely part of Venice. Unfortunately I didn't make it to Burano. :o)

I love the colorful houses, Sandy. This have even me wanting to go back to Venice. Steve's right, you should have squeezed in a pizza too. Sounds like you were starving yourself there. ;)

Wow, you ate here a lot and you didn't even go to our favourite place from the whole of the lagoon - the simple rustic pizzeria at the top of the main street (opposite one of those posh places that you mentioned).
