Getting TO/AROUND: We flew BA into Fiumicino Airport or Leonardo da Vinci Airport to give it its other name. Its a great modern clean airport - the floor shines with reflections! - one of the best i have been in. Easy connections are available into the centre of Rome by a linked railway.

Getting TO/AROUND: First of all though you have to get from the airport gate to the terminal building - a speedy "sky shuttle" about 1 min ride is available for this (much like some of our London airports)

Getting TO/AROUND: Rome's main airport is well-connected to the centre of town during the day by an express train - the Leonardo Express. It costs € 8.80 and takes approximately 30 minutes. This train departs from and arrives at track 26 or 27 at Termini station, Rome's train station.

Getting TO/AROUND: Other trains connects Fiumicino Airport to central Rome every 20 mins, and while it is slower than the express train, it does cost less. When you are at the airport train station, look for the train with the destination Orte or Fara Sabina. It stops at some smaller local stations on the way into Rome, but does NOT stop at Termini. Get off at the Tiburtina station to access central Rome - take Metro Line B or bus 649 or bus 492. The trip from the airport to Tiburtina station takes about 45 minutes. But for just a few euros more I think the express is less hassle, especially when you have luggage with you and your hotel (as many are) is near Termini.

Getting TO/AROUND: The Metro system has only two lines, A and B, which cross at Termini (main train station) shown as the orange and blue lines in the pic. Its handy for hopping on and off if your hotel is nearby but if not the bus network integrates very well and can save a lot of legwork - especially when you try to pack so much into a few short days. Tickets must be purcahsed in advance - available from many outlets - tabacchis, bars, or vending machines at metro stations and major bus stops - and validated to gain access in the metro. A Standard ticket, valid for one Metro ride or 75 minutes on all buses costs € 0.77 Daily (24hr) ticket, valid for unlimited metro, bus, and train travel within the Comune di Roma are good value at € 3.10 if you intend to make several journeys and for longer stays € 12.39 for a weekly ticket is ideal. We found the system really easy to use and maps of the lines are frequently found to enable you to travel in the right direction!

Getting TO/AROUND: The metro tends to bypass most of historic old Rome - thats because there is still so much of ancient Rome beneath the modern city that they can't dig a tunnel for the trains without running into 2,000 year-old brick walls, mosaic pavements, and marble columns! The ATAC buses and trams do go into the centre though and can be really handy. We found the H BUs route: Termini (Viale Einaudi) - Via Nazionale - Piazza Venezia - Largo Argentina - Ponte Garibaldi - Viale Trastevere (for evening meals outs) to be the most useful.

Getting TO/AROUND: The metro can be manic at rush hour - so try to avoid! The day we went to the Vatican was before 9am and it took 3 trains before we could get on one as it was so packed - but then the 3 trains arrived in the space of 5 mins so we didin't have to wait long.
