  • This is always a popular meeting place in Rome - just see how many people are on the steps and around the sinking boat fountain below! It took a while to pick our way through the people down the steps!

The steps lead up to the church of Trinita dei Monti with its twin bell towers. This french church was founded in 1495.

  • Take time to linger at the view from the top of the Spanish Steps before you thread your way down through the throngs of people.
The street seen is the Via Condotti - the expensive shopping street in Rome.

  • Bernini's Boat fountain

  • In the central part of Piazza Spagna (below the Spanish Steps) is this unusual fountain of a sinking boat built in 1623 by Bernini.
Before the river walls on Tiber were built in the end of the 19th century, the river quite often flooded the city. Once, during a terrible flood of 1598, a boat brought on Piazza di Spagna by Tiber, remained here after the water retired. Hence the low Fountain of a Boat was erected here in memory of this.

  • This square contains anothe Bernini fountain - one of the things i loved about Rome most was all the fountains. This one is the Fontana del Tritone and had cute little bees on it.

  • From Piazza del Popolo the sumptuous processions of kings and ambassadors took place, and the carnival feasts were performed as well. It was a start of the famous horse race along Via del Corso.
Piazza del Popolo was also for centuries a place of executions, the last took place in 1826.
